No ships please – this is a dock

Yet more evidence for the prosecution to the question ‘Do the authorities in Liverpool hate ships?’ The fabulously restored operational steam tug tender Daniel Adamson berthed in Canning Dock on one of her very welcome but occasional visits to the city. So how did Gower Street Estates who run the Royal Albert Dock public realm respond? By erecting food concession kiosks and vans along the waterfront completely blocking ‘The Danny’ from view, as seen above. Not only is this gormless disorganisation, but bars visitors from seeing and boarding the ship which raises its profile and attracts support. Dan Cross, Daniel Adamson Preservation Society chair, said: “It’s a disgrace. After us complaining, the worst offenders were moved. Gower Street denied it was involved, but we saw three of their staff directing the kiosk van’s removal. You couldn’t make it up. I think we should take the hint that boats aren’t wanted in the dock.” This follows the nonsense when a crucial quayside water supply pipe for refilling Daniel Adamson’s boiler was sealed because of a stand-off between Gower Street Estates and the Canal & River Trust (which owns the dock basins). Talk about ‘no ships please – we run a dock complex’. It’s beyond satire!
