On the day I write this, the historic Scottish paddle steamer Waverley celebrates the 77th anniversary of her maiden voyage on 16 June 1947 and will visit the Mersey next week for two return Llandudno and North Wales sailings. That PS Waverley remains fully operational as the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer is a fantastic tribute to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and countless volunteers, crew and administrators at Waverley Steam Navigation and Waverley Excursions. Not forgetting all of us via the National Lottery Heritage Fund. My only gripe is that we only get a couple of Mersey sailings each year as she makes her annual summer cruises around Britain. Unless you’re quick these voyages sell out and you have to wait another year in the hope of getting a ticket.
